Here is a top quality fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia alta from the Green River Shale. This fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed and the fins are well preserved. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen. The scale pattern is even preserved on this specimen. The fish has great, natural color and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the oval plate of shale. This is a very fine example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
