Here is an extremely detailed example of a classic fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This large fossil herring is beautifully fossilized and preserves very fine detail - the bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined, the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail are nicely displayed. The striking, chocolate-brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The distinct fossil is very well showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very displayable example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
