Here is an excellent fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. This classic fossil fish exhibits very fine detail - the bone structure and fins are nicely displayed, and the overall shape is quite distinct. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the scale pattern is somewhat preserved. The fish has great dark color and contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The striking fish is nicely showcased on the semi-squared plate of shale. This is a very cool example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
