This is a very large fossil fish. It is a cool Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This impressive fossil herring is quite distinct and has fine detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and many of the large scales are nicely displayed. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is beautifully showcased on the large plate of shale. And, remember, this fish is OVER TWELVE INCHES - MORE THAN A FOOT LONG! This is a huge example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
