Here is an extremely large specimen of a rare fossil fish from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Amphiplaga brachyptera from the Green River Formation. Only a handful of this type of fish are found each year. This specimen exhibits excellent detail - the head is easily seen, and the bone structure is just superb. The fins and tail are beautifully intact, which is quite unusual. The large fish (over four and a half inches long!) has excellent orangish-brown color that contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the large plate of shale. This is a huge example of this highly uncommon fish.
