This is a very fine fossil fish. It is a large (almost six inches long!) Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and has great detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the backbone of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail display beautifully. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts wonderfully with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the large, semi-squared, UNBROKEN plate of shale. This is an extremely nice, large example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
