Here is a very detailed example of a classic fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This large fossil herring is beautifully fossilized and preserves very fine detail - the bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined, the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins are nicely displayed. The striking, orange-brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The large fossil is well showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a fine, large example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
