Here is a very nice plate of fossil fish. There are two fine examples of Knightia eocaena on the slab. This specimen is from the famous Green River Formation of Wyoming. Both fish are complete and exhibit fine detail - the bone structure is clearly defined, and the fins are easily seen. The eye sockets are quite distinct, and even the backbones are preserved. The fish have great brown color, which contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossils are well displayed, nearly touching on the bellies, on the large plate of shale that also contains a third fish. And it is quite unusual that the two fish are such a contrast in sizes. This is an excellent specimen of two fossil herring from the Eocene.
