This is a very collectible fossil fish. It is a very distinct Palaebalistum sp. from Lebanon. This fabulous specimen is from the famous Chance Collection. This fish is in the same family as the classic Pycnodont fish, Gyrodus, but Palaebalistum is MUCH rarer. This fish is very round - almost as tall as it is long! The fish preserves very nice detail - even some of the crusher teeth are preserved (hard to see in photo). The fish is very well showcased on the sublithographic limestone block. This is a very collectible and displayable example of one of the rarest and most exotic fossil fish from this locality. (Comes with Dr. Chance's original reference photo and ID notes.)
