This is a very exotic fossil fish. It is a fine Pycnosteroides laevispinosus from the Cenomanian Limestone of Lebanon. Fossils from this area are very hard to obtain because of years of political unrest. This specimen has a very spikey dorsal fin and also nice fins on the underside. The fish has very fine bone detail, and the large eye socket is quite distinct. The fossil has great natural color, which contrasts beautifully with the semi-squared plate of limestone matrix. This is a very fine example of this strange fossil fish from the Cretaceous coral reefs of the present-day Middle East.
