Here is a very nice juvenile specimen of an unusual fossil fish. This is a fine Amphiplaga brachyptera from the Green River Formation of Utah. Only a handful of these fish are found each year. This baby fish is very well preserved and exhibits fine detail. The bone structure is clearly defined, and the fins and tail are easily seen. The fish has great orangish-brown color and contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very fine juvenile specimen of this uncommon fish from the Eocene.
