This is a colorful fossil fish. It is a fine Phareodus testis from the Eocene of Wyoming. This type of fish has a very wide body and two large fins near the tail. This fish is well preserved and exhibits outstanding detail. The bone structure is clearly defined, and the fins are wonderfully displayed. Even the scale pattern is somewhat intact, which is quite unusual. The sharply-pointed teeth in the open mouth are just awesome - they are easily seen with the naked eye! The fish has excellent, natural color and contrast and is well displayed on the semi-oval plate of shale. This is a very nice example of this large-toothed predatory fish from the Green River Formation.
