Here is a very attractive fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The fish exhibits wonderful detail - the bone structure is well preserved, and the fins are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and there is even a coprolite (fossil poop) preserved under the tail.. The fish has great, orangish-brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish is well showcased on the large, rectangular plate of shale. This is a very fine example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
