Here is a great specimen of an unusual predatory fish. This is Eohiodon falcatus from the Green River Shale of Wyoming. Only a handful of these rare "mooneye" fish are found each year and this is a LARGE one. The fish is beautifully articulated and exhibits very good detail. The bone structure is plainly seen and the fins are wonderfully displayed. The eye socket is quite evident and some of the small teeth are visible in the open mouth. Even the scale pattern is preserved - this is highly unusual for this species of fish. The fossil has fine color and contrast and is well presented on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very nice example of this highly uncommon fish from the Eocene.
