Here is an unusual fossil fish from the Lower Pliocene of Italy. This is Bregmaceros albyi, a pencilfish. The extinct fish has a very long, slender body, central fins, and a tiny tail. The fossil has excellent, dark brown color - the contrast with the light-colored matrix is exceptional. The fish is nicely positioned on a semi-squared slab of matrix. This is a very fine specimen of a fossil pencilfish from Italy.
