Here is an unusual pair of fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. These are Knightia alta from the Green River Shale. This type used to be referred to as a ''pregnant'' version of the common type of Knightia, but has now been found to be a different species entirely. These fossil fish are complete and exhibit very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed, and the scales of the fish are easily seen. The fish have great color and contrast well with the light-colored matrix. The fish are well showcased on the squared plate of shale. This is a very rare double example of this unusual fossil herring from the Eocene.
