Here is an extremely large specimen of a rare fossil fish from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Amphiplaga brachyptera from the Green River Formation. Only a handful of this type of fish are found each year. This specimen exhibits good detail. The head is well defined, and the bone structure is superb. The fins and tail are mostly intact, which is quite unusual. The large fish (over five inches long!) has excellent orangish-brown color that contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very large specimen of this highly uncommon fish.
