Here is a very pretty fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. This classic fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure and fins are nicely displayed, and the overall shape is quite distinct. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the scale pattern is somewhat preserved. The fossil has great orange color and contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fish is nicely centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is an excellent example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
