Here is a very nice fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. This classic fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure and fins are nicely displayed, and the overall shape is quite distinct. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the scale pattern is even preserved. The fossil has great dark color and contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fish is nicely showcased on the large plate of shale that also contains a partial fish. This is an excellent example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
