This is a very nice example of an exotic fossil fish. It is an "Exotic Sunfish" from the Jurassic Solnhofen fauna. This type of fish was rare in the Solnhofen environment because most of the lagoon was too shallow for the fish to live. These fish are known for their rows of ball-like grinding teeth (present) that were used for nipping at the coral reefs in which they lived. Also preserved is the diamond-shaped tail for which this fish is known. The fossil is well centered on the large, squared plate of lithographic limestone. This specimen was recently acquired from a major fossil collection. This is a fabulous example of this rare "tropical fish" fossil from a classic locality.
