Here is a classic fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This large fossil herring is complete and preserves fine detail. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail are nicely displayed. The striking, orange-brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The large fossil is well showcased on the semi-squared plate of shale. This is a very fine example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
