This is a very rare example of an armor plate from the Devonian placoderm, Coccosteus markae, from an unusual location near Voronezh, Russia. Placoderms are armored prehistoric fish dating from the late Silurian to the end of the Devonian Period. Their head and thorax were covered by articulated armored plates, and the rest of the body was scaled or naked, depending on the species. Placoderms were among the first of the jawed fish. This piece of armor is a very large plate of this protective shield. The fossil is complete and exhibits very good detail. This is a very unusual primitive fish fossil from an obscure location.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
