Here is a very unusual fossil. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and preserves fine detail. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins are nicely displayed. And now the unusual part. The fish was buried in the act of eating poop! Sometimes fish eat poop, and sometimes they are fossilized gasping for air and just happen to get something sucked into their mouth, like a piece of poop. The fish is well displayed on the very large plate of shale. This is a fine example of a Diplomystus fish preserved with a coprolite (poop) in its mouth.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally. A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
