Here is an unusual fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is a Knightia alta from the Green River Shale. This type used to be referred to as a ''pregnant'' version of the common type of Knightia, but has now been found to be a different species entirely. This fossil fish is complete and exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed, and the eye socket of the fish is easily seen. The fish has great color and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The fish is well displayed on the rectangular plate of shale, showcasing the upswept tail beautifully. This is a very aesthetic example of this uncommon fossil herring from the Eocene.
