This is a very rare example of an armor plate from the Devonian placoderm, Asterolepis radiata, from an unusual location near Voronezh, Russia. Placoderms are armored prehistoric fish dating from the late Silurian to the end of the Devonian Period. Their head and thorax were covered by articulated armored plates, and the rest of the body was scaled or naked, depending on the species. Placoderms were among the first of the jawed fish. This piece of armor is a LARGE plate of this protective shield. The fossil is quite distinct and exhibits fabulous detail. This is a collectible example of a very unusual primitive fish fossil from an obscure location.
