Here is a very nice, large fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and preserves fine detail. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the tail is nicely displayed. The striking, dark brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well displayed on the large, rectangular plate of shale that also contains a partial fish. This is a fabulous example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
