This is a very rare example of an armor plate from the Devonian placoderm, Coccostens sp., from an unusual location near Voronezh, Russia. Placoderms are armored prehistoric fish dating from the late Silurian to the end of the Devonian Period. Their head and thorax were covered by articulated armored plates, and the rest of the body was scaled or naked, depending on the species. Placoderms were among the first of the jawed fish. This piece of armor is the medio dorsal plate of this protective shield. The fossil is complete and exhibits very good detail. There are also other small fossils preserved on the slab. This is a very unusual primitive fish fossil from an obscure location.
