Here is a nice fossil herring from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. This large fossil fish exhibits very fine detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed, and the eye socket of the fish is easily seen. The fossil has great dark color and contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fish is nicely showcased on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a fine example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
