Here is a nice fossil fish plate. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and well preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined, the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail are nicely displayed. The dark brown color of the fish contrasts strikingly with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the large plate of shale that also contains a partial Knightia. This is a fine example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
