Here is a very distinct fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and preserves fine detail. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined. The eye socket of the fish is nicely displayed, and the fins and tail are very easily seen. The striking, orange-brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the large, rectangular plate of shale. This is a nice example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
