This is an excellent specimen of a fossil herring, Diplomystus dentatus, from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. The fish is very nicely articulated and exhibits fine detail. The bone structure is superb, the fin detail is excellent, and the eye socket is large and well displayed. The natural orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the buff-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on a rectangular block of shale. This is a very fine display specimen of this ancient fossil fish.
