Here is a very unusual creature from the Cretaceous Seas of Lebanon. This plate contains beautifully-preserved eel, Urenchelys sp. Fossil eels are EXTREMELY RARE in the fossil record, and this is a superb example. The fossil exhibits great quality - simply amazing detail. The bone structure is beautifully displayed, and the head is exquisitely preserved. The natural orangish color of the fossil contrasts well with the cream-colored matrix. The eel is wonderfully centered on the rectangular plate of sublithographic limestone that also contains a complete Carpopenaeus shrimp! This is a very collectible specimen of one of the earliest fossil eels on record.
