Here is a very nice fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Eocene of Wyoming. This large fossil herring is complete and preserves fine detail. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins are nicely displayed. The striking, orange-brown color of the fish contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the oval plate of shale. This is a very fine example of Knightia from the Green River Formation.
