Here is an outstanding specimen of a large Diplomystus dentatus from the Green River Formation. This "deep-bodied" herring exhibits fantastic detail. The bone structure is clearly defined and the fins are wonderfully displayed. The eye socket is easily seen and the upturned mouth adds a certain charm. Incredibly, the scale pattern of the Diplomystus is even evident! It is very unusual for this type of fish to have any scale pattern preserved. And the fish is quite large - over six inches long. The natural orangish-brown coloration of the fish contrasts extremely well with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is nicely presented on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very detailed example of a large Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming.
