Here is an extremely unusual fossil fish. It is a very well preserved Centriscus strigatus from the Miocene of Italy. This is a type of Trumpetfish, which is unusual in the fossil record. The large fish exhibits great detail - the eye socket is easily seen, and the long trumpet-like mouth is well displayed. The fossil has excellent, dark brown color and contrasts nicely with the grey matrix. The fish is almost perfectly centered on the large, semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a fabulous specimen of this unique fossil fish from Italy.
