This is a very large fossil fish. It is a fine Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and has fine detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins and tail are nicely displayed. The orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is beautifully centered on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very nice, large example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
