This is a wonderful specimen of an extremely unusual fossil fish. It is a fine Peipiaosteus sp. from the ''Feathered Dinosaur'' site of China. When it was first discovered, this type was thought to be a fossil shark, but further research found it to be a fossil sturgeon. This excellent fish is well preserved in semi-dorsal view, and the detail of the fish is just exquisite. The skull of the fish is easily seen, the gill covers are very distinct, and the fins and tail are clearly defined. Even the skin of the fish is intact, and some of the internal organs are evident. The fossil has beautiful natural color and striking contrast and is nicely showcased on the large (9.0'' X 11.5'') plate of matrix. This is a very collectible example of this uncommon fossil fish from China.
