Here is a very attractive plate of fossil fish. There are two large examples of Knightia eocaena on the slab. This specimen is from the famous Green River Formation of Wyoming. Both fish are complete and exhibit fine detail. The bone structure is clearly defined, and the fins are easily seen. The eye sockets are quite distinct and even the scale pattern is partially preserved. The fish have great orangish-brown color, which contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossils are well positioned on the large, squared plate of shale. There is even a faint impression of a third fish between the two main fish (can you see it?) This is an excellent specimen of two fossil herring from the Eocene.
