This is an unusual fossil fish. It is a large Nematonotus from the Cretaceous of Lebanon. Political unrest in Lebanon has made fossil collecting difficult, and very few specimens will be exported in the coming years. This type of fish has an extremely long dorsal fin spine. The fish has great detail preserved - the tail, fins, and eye socket are all easily seen. The fossil has great natural color and is beautifully centered on the rectangular plate that also has an excellent Carpopenaeus callirostris shrimp preserved. This is a great example of this distinct fossil fish in association with an ancient crustacean.
