Here is an extremely unusual fossil fish. It is a very well preserved Centriscus strigatus from the Miocene of Italy. This is a type of trumpetfish, which is unusual in the fossil record. The large fish exhibits great detail - the eye socket is easily seen, and the long trumpet-like mouth is quite apparent. The fossil has excellent, dark brown color and contrasts nicely with the grey matrix. The fish is well centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a wonderful specimen of this unique fossil fish from Italy.
