This is a very exotic fossil fish. It is a beautiful Ctenothrissa vexillifer from the sublithographic limestone of Lebanon. Fossils from this area are very hard to obtain because of years of political unrest. This amazing specimen has a bizarre ''sail-backed'' dorsal fin and large, extended fins on the underside. The fish has incredibly fine detail, even displaying the individual bones and eye socket. The fossil has great color and contrasts beautifully with the large plate of limestone matrix that also contains a small pipefish! This is an excellent example of this bizarre fossil fish from the Cretaceous coral reefs.
