Here is a very detailed fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is complete and beautifully preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined, the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the fins are nicely displayed. The orange-brown color of the fish contrasts strikingly with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the oval plate of shale. This is a very fine example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
