This is a very nice specimen of a fossil herring, Diplomystus dentatus, from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. The specimen is very nicely articulated and exhibits fine detail. The bone structure is superb, the fin detail is excellent, and the eye socket is large and well displayed. The natural orangish-brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the buff-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on a rectangular block of shale. This is a fine display specimen of an ancient fossil fish.
