Here is an excellent specimen of an unusual fossil fish from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This is Amphiplaga bracyptera from the Eocene. Only a handful of these fish are found each year. This specimen exhibits fine detail - the mouth is open, the bone structure is clearly defined, and the fins are wonderfully displayed. The orange-brown fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish is well centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a great specimen of this uncommon fossil fish.
