Here is a very diplayable fossil fish from Wyoming. This is an extremely large Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene. This fish exhibits incredible detail - the bone structure is clearly defined, and the fins are beautifully displayed. The eye socket is easily seen and the upturned mouth adds a certain charm to the specimen. The orangish color of the fossil contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The Diplo is well positioned on the almost rectangular plate of matrix that also has a tiny baby fish preserved on the back of the larger fish! This is a stunning specimen of a large fossil herring from the Green River Formation.
