Here is an interesting platter of fish from the Eocene of Wyoming. There are two different types of fish on the plate. On the left side of the slab is a very large example (over six inches long) of Diplomystus dentatus. This fossil herring has great bone structure and even has the scale pattern preserved. A wonderfully detailed specimen of Knightia humilis is present on the right side of the plate. This fish has fine bone structure and the fins and tail are beautifully displayed. Both dark brown fish contrast nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fish are well positioned on the rectangular plate of shale that also contains a partial impression of another fish. This is a very displayable example of two different fish from the Fossil Lake deposits.
