This is a fine specimen of an extremely unusual fossil fish. It is a Peipiaosteus sp.(?) from the ''feathered dinosaur'' site of China. When it was first discovered, this type was thought to be a fossil shark, but further research found it to be a fossil sturgeon. This large fish is well preserved in dorsal view, and the detail of the fish is very nice. The gill covers are very distinct, and the fins and tail are clearly defined. The fossil has wonderful color and contrast and is easily seen on the unbroken plate of matrix. And best of all, there is NO REPAIR, RESTORATION to this fossil whatsoever. This is a very nice example of this bizarre fossil sturgeon from China.
