This is a great specimen of an extremely unusual fossil fish. It is a Peipiaosteus sp. from the ''feathered dinosaur'' site of China. When it was first discovered, this type was thought to be a fossil shark, but further research found it to be a fossil sturgeon. This excellent fish is beautifully displayed in dorsal view, and the detail of the fish is just wonderful. The eyes of the fish are easily seen, the gill covers are very distinct, and the fins are clearly defined. Even the skin of the fish is preserved! The fossil has gorgeous color and contrast and is well centered on the large (9.5'' X 10.5''), unbroken, natural plate of matrix. This is a superb specimen of this unusual fossil sturgeon from China.
