Here is an extremely attractive specimen of a rare fossil fish from the Eocene of Wyoming. This is Amphiplaga bracyptera from the Green River Formation. Only a handful of these fish are found each year. This specimen exhibits wonderful detail. The eye socket is clearly defined, and the bone structure is superb. The fins are complete, and the open mouth is easily seen. Even the scale pattern of the fish is evident. The fish has excellent orangish-brown color and contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is almost perfectly centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very displayable specimen of this highly uncommon fish.
