This is a gorgeous fossil fish. It is a large Nematonatus longispinus from the Cretaceous of Lebanon. Due to political unrest, fossils from this site are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. This type of fish has a wide body and possesses an extremely long spine extending from the anterior of the dorsal fin. This stunning specimen is complete and exhibits outstanding detail. The bone structure is easily seen, and the fins are quite distinct. The long spine of the dorsal fin is real and very evident, and the large tail of the fish is clearly defined. The natural, orangish color of the fish is very striking and contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The fish is beautifully displayed on the somewhat rectangular plate of sublithographic limestone that also contains a large fish scale. This is an exquisite example of this exotic-looking fish from the Cretaceous.
